Graz has carried the title of Austria's Capital of Culinary Delights since 2008, and it earns it: farmers sell at city markets six mornings a week, pumpkin seed oil turns up on everything from salad to ice cream, and the wine country of southern Styria is under an hour away. Practical Tips

Reserve ahead for dinner from Thursday to Saturday and for any terrace table in summer. Many kitchens close between lunch and dinner, and some restaurants take Sunday or Monday off. Service is included in the price; rounding up or adding five to ten percent is customary. For a cheap and very local lunch, visit the farmers' markets on Kaiser-Josef-Platz and Lendplatz, open Monday to Saturday mornings.
